Nanotechnology is fast moving and thrives in environments where change is embraced. Certainly many large companies are capable of this, but the reduction of bureaucracy and flexible nature of small companies is a strong combination when working in nanotechnology. This is born out by the fact that according to the Woodrow Wilson Institute, generally 90% of US manufactures involved in Nanotechnology are less than 100 people and 65 to 70% are less than 20 people. Additionally, Global economic pressures are constantly placing demands on companies to lower overall costs.
The picture of a good nanotechnology company is clear. Typically it is a small company operating where there is low cost. This is exactly what is found in rural America. Adding to these qualities are such things as a reputation for high work ethics and healthy lifestyle.
RINTek’s south east location provides opportunity and synergy
- We are conveniently located near I90, US Highways 52 and 61 in SE Minnesota.
- The following map shows the relationship the Institute has to centers of learning and industry in the tri-state area of Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin.
- Key centers are within easy driving distance providing opportunity for synergy with both educational institutions as well as large and small industries. As is seen, Rochester, Winona, Decorah, and La Crosse are within 40 miles of Rushford.
- Furthermore, the Twin Cities in Minnesota and Madison, Wisconsin are within a few hour’s drive, placing even more opportunity for cooperative efforts at viable distance.
- Let’s look at each of the four centers mentioned above. Rochester, MN with a population of over 70,000 has two colleges, IBM, and Mayo Clinic, plus many other smaller industries that could benefit by using, learning, or teaching aspects related to nanotechnology.
- Winona, MN, population 27,000, has two universities and a technical college, plus over 100 businesses. South East Technical College will provide a 2 year degree in nanotechnology starting in 2007. Winona State University will be developing a 4 year nanotechnology program in the near future and already offers introductory courses. Many of the businesses could benefit from introducing nanotechnology into their products.
- Decorah, Iowa, has Luther College. And, further south within easy driving are Ames, Iowa and Des Moines with Iowa State and Iowa University and large industrial centers.
- La Crosse, WI, population over 77,000 has two Universities – Viterbo and University of Wisconsin at La Crosse – plus Western Wisonsin Technical College. It also has a strong industrial base as well as two major medical facilities in Gunderson Lutheran and Francisan-Skemp which is part of the Mayo system.
